$12 Chair revamp

I hope everyone had a wonderful Valentines Day on Monday. I know I did, my hubby and I spent a wonderful evening together after the kids went to bed. He even busted out his guitar and serenaded me with a song he wrote me a few years ago. Sigh, it was wonderful!

The next day, I woke up with stabbing knife like pain in my stomach and a little while later, I was in the bathroom. Yuck! I'm feeling better today, not 100% but definitely not spending time in the bathroom like yesterday! I laid in bed all day yesterday and did NOTHING. AUGH! So thankful my hubs can work from home and help me out on days like yesterday!

After laying in bed yesterday, I'm making up for it today. I have already sewn one pillow cover and then reupholstered the ugly chair in the living room. I'm not quite done with the back yet, I need some help with it. But from the front you can't even tell so I thought I'd post a few pictures.

My friend Jen gave this chair to me, she bought it at a garage sale and wanted to give her a makeover but never got around to it.  So I inherited the chair and have had it sitting around for about 3 years looking like the picture below.  Yikes!  Here she is, looking really sad, the schnauzer thinks it is fun to scratch at the foam pad, I don't think it's so fun.

 

Here she is now, looking all sassy in her $12 fabric.   Not my favorite  pick but for $12 it was a good choice seeing as I've never redone a chair like this  before and I didn't want to ruin expensive fabric.

Just pretend that little wrinkle isn't there, k?   Didn't see that until now. I'll fix it later.

I also used some of the fabric from the chair to sew a pillow cover.  Not sure if I'm liking it with the paisley, what do you think?  Mixing too many different styles?  Or is it working in a funky kind of way? 

Somedays I wish you could all jump through the screen and have a conference with me in my living room, things don't look the same on the computer as they do in person.  I wouldn't be surprised if that is possible in 20 years, I remember writing in 1st grade that my invention would be a telephone in your car.  Anyways, moving on.....

Dining Room Update & the project grows bigger

So I didn't really have a clear vision for my dining room but I knew that I wanted to recover my chairs and change it up a bit. I have debated painting the dining room set, painting the corner hutches a color besides white, picking some bright funky colors or just keeping it all the same and installing the hutches.
So here is what has become my inspiration, I've been in love with this blog post post and also this post.  So, the dining room makeover is flowing into the entryway and down the back hallway so stay tuned!
Here is the front entryway hall to the left of this is the living room:

I really need to paint the ceiling.....adding to the looonnnnnngggg project list right now.

There is actual trim around the front door now, it looks so much better!  I was thinking of doing the board and batten on the left side of this hallway.

I would do some board and batten on the right side of the stairs so it would wrap around from the dining room which is to the right of the stairs.  I wish I could rip off the ugly/dirty disgusting carpet off of the stairs but with 4 children and one of them less than two  years old, I don't think it's a good idea.  But as soon as I can, I will have that off in record time!

If you continue down the front hall with the picture frames it goes back to this hallway which was ugly tan paneling when we first moved in.  I have painted it but it would look so much cuter if it was board and batten!  The closet doors at the end of the hall would be where the new "office closet" would be.  To the right is the kitchen and to the left is the playroom.  Confused yet?

Moving on, here is a sneak peak at what I've done so far in the dining room, during naptime I painted the brown that was on the bottom half of the wall.

I bought this fabric back in November and returned it because I just wasn't sure if it was what I was looking for.  On Sunday I bought the same fabric, again.  I really like it, I wish it was maybe a bit brighter but I think it flows with the kitchen, front entry and living room colors.  Not sure if I'll repaint the blue/green color or not yet, it matches but I might try and pull some of the gray/green out instead. 

What do you think?  Is the fabric too dull for the chairs or will it look good?

Would love any feedback you have or better yet if you have a picture of some board and batten or other trim work you've done in your house, I would love to see it!

My new old kitchen chairs

I have disliked our kitchen table and chairs for a few years now. They are the ugly honey oak color that I think almost every table and chair that was made in the early to mid 2000's was stained. Ok, well not every table and chair but every table and chair that we could afford at that time. I decided on a whim the other day that I was going to paint the chairs and table black. I really thought about doing white but with white kitchen cabinets and white beadboard, I thought the table might get lost or make it look like a snow storm hit my kitchen. I also debated doing an espresso color but I chose black. I thought for sure Mr.A would not like this idea so I sort of started the project before I told him what I was doing. He doesn't always like my project ideas when I explain them to him but if I do it first and don't tell him beforehand he usually really likes my projects. Well was I surprised when he said, "I actually thought of that the other weekend when you were gone. I thought it would be cool if I could do it for you and surprise you when you came home but taking care of the kids was enough for one weekend." That was so sweet of him!
I kind of went blindly into this project like I do so many others. I bought some primer and paint and a sponge roller. I sanded the table down with the palm sander first to get the polyurethane coating off the top. I didn't do the legs of the table or the chairs though. I then primed it all with the roller and then changed my mind on the paint and went back and bought spray paint instead. The first two chairs I didn't sand down the primer and I wish I would have but instead I just started spraying them. I did sand the primer off the rest of the chairs before spraying them with the black. In between the fist and second coat of spray paint I also sanded some spots that were a little rough. I didn't take any before pictures but I found this kitchen picture that shows the table and chairs in their oakiness.

Here are a few after pics of the chairs.  I am not done with the table but will post that soon (hopefully).

This is the spray paint I used on the chairs, I so far have used 8 cans and I need probably at least 2 more to finish the legs and apron of the table.  This picture didn't turn out the best but it's all I got for now!
